The project was conceived as an attached ADU above the existing garage, transforming an underutilized portion of the property into a compact and efficient living space. The existing garage was retained as shared storage for both the primary residence and the new unit, maximizing the functionality of the existing structure without expanding the property’s footprint.
The owner envisioned the ADU as a compact and comfortable home aligned with contemporary living patterns, where efficient use of space takes precedence over oversized living areas. Located near a university district, the property also presented an opportunity to accommodate a co-living arrangement, allowing the main residence to be rented to a group of students while the ADU provided an independent dwelling for additional occupants.
The 600-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bathroom ADU is designed to comfortably accommodate two residents while maintaining a strong sense of openness and privacy. A private balcony extends the living space outdoors and connects directly to the hillside landscape, creating a quiet retreat with views toward the surrounding terrain.
